工业给水处理包括多道工序，通常把电渗析、反渗析、离子交换等处理工艺作为主要工序，为了保证这些主要工序能安全、高效、经济地运行，需要将原水处理到这些水处理装置所允许的进水水质指标。工程中我们常把进入主要工序前的水质净化、预软化或水质调整，称为水质预处理，简称预处理。预处理的对象主要是机械杂物、胶体、二氧化硅、微生物、有机物和活性氯等对后续处理装置产生不利影响的物质。预处理的好坏直接影响电渗析、反渗透、离子交换等主要处理工艺的技术经济效果和长期安全运行，它是工业给水处理中非常重要的一环。
